This is the story of my formative years in Uganda's tourism industry - years shaped by opportunity, humble work, professional tests, painful setbacks, loyal friendships and an ever-growing passion for birds.

When people see a successful guide, birder, trainer or tourism leader, they often see the visible results: the tours completed, the institutions built, the people trained and the recognition earned. They rarely see the uncertain beginnings, the long walks to work, the modest wages, the dismissals, the moments of rejection or the difficult decisions that tested a person's character.

My journey did not begin with influence, money or a recognised name. It began with a newspaper advertisement, a willingness to learn and a determination to remain useful wherever I was placed.
